Term: Summer
Dates: Early June-Early July
Description:
Tyler Metals Workshop - England/Scotland is a four-week studio art workshop in London and Scotland. The program is offered by the Crafts Department, Tyler School of Art, in conjunction with the Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh, Scotland. The course structure is directed towards studio art majors with a concentration in metals and jewelry with one-year studio experience beyond the freshman level. The program emphasizes the creation of artwork based on the students cross-cultural experiences during the program. Access to English and Scottish metalsmiths and artist/educators, travel, and museum visits, as well as lectures and slide presentations, supplement the curriculum.
Highlights:
Students first fly to London for an introductory week visiting contemporary metalsmiths, museums, and art galleries. London is one of the worlds foremost financial, commercial, industrial, and cultural centers. Londons cultural institutions include the British Museum, The National Gallery, Tate Modern, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Among its landmarks are the remains of the citys Roman walls, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, and Westminster Abbey. Side trips to Stonehenge, Bath, and other points of interest are also offered. Students then spend three weeks in Scotland, in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. Glasgow ranks among the worlds best centers for the visual arts, enjoying a steady lineage of artists, architects, and designers. It is home to the unique Burrell Collection and the Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery. Participants also spend four days in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. The final week is spent in Edinburgh, working in the studio facilities operated by the Edinburgh College of Art, an internationally renowned and highly successful independent art school. The facilities are excellent, but the ideas that continually drive and refresh the schools educational offerings are even more important. The school is located in Edinburgh, one of Europes finest capitals, with a rich sense of history as well as a contemporary feel. The city has attracted generations of artists, writers, scientists, and philosophers. This rich cultural mix finds expression in some of the finest museums, galleries, and libraries in Europe.
