SUNY New Paltz - Summer French Language Studies

  France
  • Paris:
  • Paris

Term: Summer
Dates: End June-End July

Description: SUNY New Paltz French Language Program in Paris emphasizes on language proficiency, culture and civilization, and contemporary French literature. It provides students with an extended 'total immersion' experience and opportunity to earn 6 undergraduate or graduate credits in a relatively short period of time toward their degree.

Paris has always been and still remains the very heart of French culture. Participants will have ample opportunity to take advantage of its many cultural offerings, either in planned activities or on their own. The museum d'Orsay with its 7,000 impressionist paintings, the ultra modern centre Pompidou (Beaubourg) with its museum of modern art and cinemathoque, the Rodin Museum, the museum Marmottan with its permanent 'Monet et ses amis' collection, not to mention the Louvre with its new and controversial 'pyramide', and the completely renovated historical 'quartier du Marais' are among the countless places of interest Paris has to offer.

The program is designed, in part, to facilitate the completion of second certification for teachers of other foreign languages. It also provides the opportunity for undergraduate students to complete their language requirement and sharpen their linguistic skills. Graduate courses are applicable to the MS and MAT in French programs.

Courses are available at the ILCF at all levels. Students will take a
placement examination on arrival free of charge. Depending on placement, students will enroll in courses at the elementary, intermediate, advanced or superior level. All students will take courses in general language: grammar, oral, written, vocabulary; for approximately 15 hours per week in the morning. Additionally, elementary and intermediate level students will have workshops in language practice one afternoon per week. Students at the advanced level will have the choice of culture or literature classes one afternoon per week.

Highlights: College credits:
Students are required to take 6 undergraduate credits. These courses are available at the graduate level for qualified students. In some cases nine credits can be arranged for an additional fee.

Qualifications:
(The Program Is Offered To Students Attending American Accredited and Colleges)
Open to college students with at least one year of college level French language studies. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. Well qualified high-school seniors with advanced French language proficiency may also apply.

Housing and Meals:
Students live in clean, comfortable, private dormitory accommodations in a community of French and International students. Communal areas include kitchen facilities, dining space, television room, library, and telephone and computer access. An allotment for meals is included in the program fee.

Field Trips:
Planned activities include a welcome meal and general tour of Paris, one weekend excursion, and a farewell dinner. Past excursions have included such places as the castles of the Loire valley, the beaches of Normandy and the D-Day memorial in Caen, or the a tour of the Champagne region. Additional outings will be planned according to availability and feasibility. Possibilities include group outings to museums in and around Paris, a French play or movie, and visits to monuments or famous buildings. July is a great time to be in Paris and we will also take full advantage of events in the city such as the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14th and the arrival in Paris of the Tour de France on July 24th.

Financial Aid:
Students may apply for financial aid at their home campus financial aid office. Financial aid deferrals may be applied toward tuition and program fee only.

Health Insurance:
All students are required to have approved insurance coverage while studying abroad.
