SUNY New Paltz Study Abroad program in Oviedo, Spain is conducted by the University of Oviedo, a fully accredited university that issues all transcripts. Students are expected to carry a full-time academic load (12-15 undergraduate credits per semester) and will be offered a variety of courses to choose from toward their degree. The city of Oviedo is one of the most important centers of cultural activity in the northwest of Spain. With nearly 200,000 inhabitants it is also the capital of the 'Principado de Asturias', and the geographical, administrative, commercial, and cultural center of the region. The climate in Asturias is quite mild, except in the high mountains, and often rainy. The mountains and villages along the coast are ideal places to vacation. There are a number of ski resorts in the region. Oviedo has a very active cultural life with concerts, operas, conferences, congresses, museums, libraries, exhibitions, etc. All students are expected to complete at lease 4 courses each semester. Students take a placement exam and are placed into either the intermedio level (upper division courses at the 300 or 3rd year level) or avanzado level (upper division courses at the 400 or 4th year level). Highlights:
College credits: Students are required to take 12-15 undergraduate credits per semester. Qualifications: (The program is offered to students attending American Accredited Universities and Colleges) Students who are second-semester Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply. Two years or more of college-level Spanish (or its equivalent), and a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. MATURITY and INDEPENDENCE are a MUST for this program. The SUNY New Paltz Oviedo program does not have a Resident Director and assistance available from the International Office at the University of Oviedo is typically minimal. SUNY New Paltz will generally arrange for a native of the area to be available to the participants during the first few weeks of the program while students locate housing and select courses, and to provide support as well as some orientation to the city and university. Field Trips and Orientation: Organized field trips are available at low cost through the International Office. Housing: Students typically live in shared apartments with American, Spanish or International roommates while generally preparing their own meals and doing their own laundry. Students will locate their housing with the assistance of the university's International Office. Temporary accommodations will be arranged for several days while permanent housing is being located. Students pay the landlord directly. Financial Aid: Students may apply for financial aid at their home campus financial aid office. Financial aid deferrals may be applied toward tuition and program fee only. Health Insurance: All students must have approved insurance coverage while studying abroad.
