SUNY New Paltz Study Abroad program in Limerick, Ireland is conducted by the University of Limerick, a fully accredited university that issues all transcripts. Students are expected to carry a full-time academic load (12-15 undergraduate credits per semester) and will be offered a variety of courses to choose from toward their degree. The University of Limerick offers a well-established Study Abroad Programme. Visiting students are fully integrated into the student body and follow the same lectures, seminars and tutorials taking the same assessments as Irish students. Although Study Abroad students are treated like Irish students they have one special advantage, namely a greater freedom of choice in selecting their programme of study. Students may choose from a wide range of modules in all years and may register across faculties and departments. Ireland is an island with five million people located in the northwest of the European mainland. It has a temperate maritime climate with pleasant summer temperatures. English is the most widely spoken language. Long renowned for its scholarship, Ireland has a proud tradition of education and serving other nations. Almost half of the Irish people are under the age of 25 and over 65,000 participate in third level education. Limerick is a thriving modern city, the fourth largest in Ireland. It is the capital of Ireland's Mid West Region. It has a long history that can be traced a thousand years or more. Within a day's excursion are the countries of Galway, Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Kerry. Shannon International Airport, only 16 miles from Limerick, provides daily access to a wide range of international destinations.
Highlights:
College credits: Students are required to take 12-15 undergraduate credits per semester. Qualifications: (The program is offers to students attending American accredited universities and colleges). The program is open to college students who are sophomores, juniors and seniors at the time of application, with an above average academic record. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.9 is required for admission to the programme. Orientation and Field Trips: An Orientation Programme eases the transition of overseas students from their home country to Ireland, and to life and study at the University of Limerick. All new students attend the programme, which is scheduled at the beginning of each semester. A special programme of 'off campus' activities such as concerts, field trips to Dublin and weekend schools in the West of Ireland is an integral part of the Study Abroad Programme. Housing: At the University of Limerick, three attractive residential halls are provided for students. Individual two story town houses of four, six or eight bedrooms have been arranged in landscaped courtyards in an attractive village style. Each house offers single bedrooms. Students typically prepare their own meals. Financial Aid: Students may apply for financial aid at their home campus financial aid office. Financial aid deferrals may be applied toward tuition and program fee only. Health Insurance: All students must have approved insurance coverage while studying abroad.
