  • Besancon

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Sept - Jan / Jan - May / Sept - May

Description: SUNY New Paltz Study Abroad program in Besancon, France is conducted by the Centre de Linguistique Appliquee de Besancon, is a fully accredited education center that issues all transcripts. All students are required to carry a full-time academic load (12 or more credit hours per semester depending on the placement level). Students will be offered a variety of courses to choose from toward their degree.

Besancon is unique in that it has few native English speakers, thus providing an optimal environment for students wishing to improve or perfect their French language skills. Approximately three hours to Paris, and two and a half to Geneva by express train, Besancon is one of the smaller crossroads in the heart of Europe.

Besancon is a 'manageable' city, one that students can quickly get to know and feel at home in. The people are quite friendly and usually very appreciative of a foreign student's efforts to communicate in French.

The SUNY New Paltz program in Besançon enables students to study at one of the top language schools in France, the Center for Applied Linguistics. It is part of the "Universite de Franche-Comte".

Mdme Annick Jaccard-Beugnet, a native of Besançon, is the director of the program. She has a doctorate in Sociology of Art & Culture, has taught in the SUNY New Paltz Paris summer program, and has a wealth of knowledge about French history and culture.

Based on the placement exam results, students will take either 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree studies in the Cours Annuel of the Centre de Linguistique Appliquee (Cours Annuel - Descriptif Programme). Students must carry a minimum of 12 credits but may take up to 18 credits each semester.
