Syracuse University Florence Program

  Italy
  • Florence:
  • Florence

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: August to December and January to May

Description: In operation since 1959, the Syracuse program in Florence allows students to uncover the city's artistic treasures and the literary, economic, political and social milieu that brought them into the world. Courses range from Roman art and architecture to modernist Florence, from the language and literature of Dante and Petrarch to Italo Calvino, from Medieval/Renaissance history and economy to the European economy and government. Native-speaking Italian language faculty provides courses at all levels of fluency. Courses and homestay housing arrangements are supported by excellent student services and the best English-language library in Florence. This program has set the standard for academic excellence and comprehensive student support services.

Available programs include Arts & Sciences, Studio Art, Pre-Architecture, and Architecture.

The Academic Internship Program offers students unique opportunities to apply classroom learning to actual work situations, explore career options, and develop professional skills while earning academic credit. Internships can be organized in a variety of settings: municipal organizations, museums, libraries, political parties, non-governmental organizations, schools, social services, communications and businesses.

Highlights: * 75 Liberal Arts courses
* Art History and Studio Art
* Study in English and Italian
* Field trips throughout Italy
* Homestays with Italian families

Qualifications: Students should be enrolled full-time in the Syracuse University Florence Program, as the internship is a part of their regular course of study. Internship requests are subject to availability and an on-site interview and placements cannot be guaranteed. The greater a student's fluency in Italian, the wider the range of internship opportunities. Students must complete an internship request form and be recommended by a faculty member in the field (or in a related field) in which they wish to be placed. References should specifically address the academic knowledge and particular skills (research, writing, etc.) that they can offer to the placement and their ability to participate successfully in a foreign setting.
