Syracuse University Hong Kong Program

  China
  • Hong Kong:
  • Hong Kong

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: August to December and January to May

Description: Syracuse University's Hong Kong program offers students the opportunity to study the political economies, business, and cultures of East Asia at a pivotal moment in the region's history. As Hong Kong continues to move forward as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, students not only study but also participate within a political landscape and marketplace that is important to the 21st century as the U.S. was to the 20th.

The Syracuse academic program, hosted by City University of Hong Kong, combines field study in China, coursework at the Syracuse University Center, and an intensive five-week internship or research project. But students also have the choice, if they wish, to take courses directly in City University alongside Chinese students. Housing is in comfortable guest houses and halls of residence.

The internship option takes place in the final five weeks each semester. This experience allows for in-depth and practical understanding of how business, government, and nongovernmental organizations function in Hong Kong. Placements are available in a wide variety of businesses, banking firms, retailing, and the communications industry. Students have also worked with Hong Kong legislators, consulting and law firms, and trade magazine publishers.

Highlights:
* Field study seminar in Beijing, Shanghai and other locations
* Visits to factories, businesses, government, cultural sites throughout the semester
* Internships with multinational firms and other agencies
* Resources of City University of Hong Kong
* Comfortable lodging in university residence halls

Degree Level: Bachelors Degree (Undergraduate)

Qualifications: Students should be enrolled full-time in the Syracuse University Hong Kong Program, as the internship is a part of their regular course of study. Internship requests are subject to availability and an on-site interview, and placements cannot be guaranteed. Students must complete an internship request form and be recommended by a faculty member in the field (or in a related field) in which they wish to be placed. References should specifically address the academic knowledge and particular skills (research, writing, etc.) that they can offer to the placement and their ability to participate successfully in a foreign setting.
