Established in 1873 by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, the university has an international reputation for academic excellence. The University's modern and well-equipped facilities are spread across a spacious suburban campus, with easy access to the center of the city. With about 12,000, the University of Canterbury has hosted thousands of international students over more than 40 years. Canterbury is the only university on the South Island to have major field stations, serving as field-trip bases and research centers for staff and students. Christchurch is the largest city in New Zealand's South Island and it is also known as the Garden City. It lies on the coastal edge of the Canterbury Plains, close to both sea and mountains. The city offers, cultural and recreational opportunities and access to national parks and wilderness areas; several ski-fields and silvery beaches within an hour and a half's drive from campus. Vibrant, cosmopolitan, great shopping and host of activities define Christchurch.
Highlights:
The University of Canterbury Student 's Association sponsors such a variety of clubs that there is something for everyone. The Tramping Club is one of the most popular clubs on campus, with tramping gear available for rent. The International Student Center plans a variety of events throughout the year, including a ski trip. There is always something happening on campus and around the city.
