- Multi-Country

France
Term: Summer
Dates: June - August (6 weeks)
Description:
Direct contact with leading business professionals and designers is one of the hallmarks of this exciting program. It begins with a week in Paris, where students have the opportunity to study French industries in a wide variety of ways. Field trips have included haute couture showings (exclusive, ticketed events), tours of couture workrooms and the Paris bureau of Women's Wear Daily, and studio meetings with designers. At the FSU London Study Center, courses provide a study of British retail, textile, and apparel industries and their role in a global economy. Beginning with a historical perspective, the students study the retail industry, comparing current management techniques, merchandising, merchandise assortments, research, and technology. The textiles course surveys textiles used in historical buildings, in costumes, and in museums. It also examines current technology and research in the British textile industry. Each student completes a project and portfolio, with an emphasis on comparing U.S. and European practices. Classroom lectures by Florida State University faculty are augmented by lectures from British professionals and fashion forecasting firms, and by exclusive field trips, such as meetings with executives from major retail corporations; tours of the costume collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum; and visits to the Textile Conservation Studio at Hampton Court Palace.
