Russia: Moscow - Florida State University International Programs

  Russia
  • Moscow:
  • Moscow (Moskva)

Term: Summer
Dates: May 5 - June 15 (6 Weeks)

Description: Students on this program will be fascinated by the diversity in Moscow: collections of world-renowned art, technological wonders at the KGB Museum, the multicolored cupolas of St. Basil's Cathedral, the treasure of the tsars in the Kremlin Armory. And at the end of the day, they can relax at an evening tea, complete with zakuski (appetizers)-or perhaps enjoy a night out at the elegant Bolshoi Theatre.

Students will be exploring all that this unique city offers while attending classes at Moscow State University, one of the world's most respected and intellectually rigorous universities. Even the Moscow State University dormitory in which they are housed is impressive. Constructed during the Stalinist regime, it boasts a museum of natural history towering above Moscow and a magnificent view of the city skyline from each student's room. Here, acquaintances with Russian students are easily made, another chance to hone speaking skills and to better learn about people from a region even less familiar than Western Europe.

Faculty from both Moscow State and Florida State team-teach courses in Russian art, music, culture, history, folklore, and language (ranging from beginning to graduate levels). Small classes provide individual attention, but beyond this, students have the great advantage of being taught by professors of Russian and Russian studies who specialize in teaching their native language as a second language. Students gain competence more swiftly than they could imagine.

Russia: Moscow - Florida State University International Programs

Highlights: Intensive language classes in the morning are followed by afternoon cultural study. At least two Moscow or nearby field trips are scheduled weekly in connection with coursework. A Monday through Thursday academic schedule allows program excursions every weekend. Russia's exotic and legendary cities, architecture, countryside, artists, and history are fully integrated-through field trips and longer excursions-into the academic schedule. In Moscow, students visit the Kremlin, DUMA (the Russian parliament), St. Basil's Cathedral and Lenin's Tomb on Red Square, the Historical Museum, and Star City, the training ground for Russian cosmonauts. On a trip to St. Petersburg (during its famous White Nights), they discover the city and its many canals by boat and take additional excursions to Peterhof, the Hermitage, and the Dostoevsky Museum.

Housing - The university dormitory features suite-style living: two single rooms with shared sink, shower, and refrigerator. Students usually cook their meals in the large kitchens located on each floor or take reasonably priced meals in the cafeteria. A 15-minute walk away are the metro station University and the Moscow Circus; an open market, or rynok, is a 10-minute walk.
