Ireland: Dublin - Florida State University International Programs

Term: Summer
Dates: inquire for specific dates

Description: Its charter was granted more than 400 years ago. Its graduates (both revered and irreverent) have helped shape, change and illuminate every aspect of Irish life. Its historic campus will be your home-a perfect place for studying and discovering Ireland's legendary delights. Founded in 1592, the University of Dublin is Ireland's oldest university, with Trinity College its sole, prestigious college. Here in the heart of Dublin is housed the Book of Kells, the ninth-century manuscript of the Gospels whose famous illustrations draw admirers from around the world. And here also is a library containing virtually every book published in the British Isles. What better setting than Trinity College, Dublin, to immerse yourself in Irish history and culture'

From James Joyce to Bono, from Oscar Wilde to Sinead O'Connor, from William Butler Yeats to Samuel Beckett, the list of famous Dubliners who have left their mark on art and life in the English-speaking world is astoundingly long. If Dublin has a secret, you will have a month to search it out. Walking tours of the Trinity campus and the city will introduce you to landmarks and legends: the Old Library, Liffey River, Abbey Theatre, National Gallery of Art, and St. Patrick's Cathedral (where Jonathan Swift was dean). But you'll be caught up in the Irish present too-getting a firsthand taste of the famous Irish energy in events that may include an evening of music and dancing, a play, or the All-Ireland Semifinal Hurling Match.

Ireland: Dublin - Florida State University International Programs

Highlights: Monday through Thursday classes in Irish life and culture, literature, history, and theatre will be taught by faculty from Trinity College, other Dublin institutions, or FSU. The university's library and computer facilities will be available to program students. Both day and overnight trips offer even more expansive, and breathtaking, views of Ireland and its ancient culture. You may visit County Wicklow (the 'Garden of Ireland'), prehistoric New Grange, Galway and the Aran Islands-the setting for John M. Synge's powerful drama Riders to the Sea. Students will have comfortable university housing in an historic area of Trinity College. Two single rooms share a lounge, with separate bathroom facilities shared by four or five residents. The accommodations include a daily continental breakfast and each floor of the residence offers a kitchen for cooking.
