Description:
'Students never leave Florence as they came.' For Dr. Victor Carrabino, director of the Florence Program for fourteen years, the powerful impact is no surprise-precisely because this art-permeated city surprises students at every turn and twist of its ancient, busy streets. Here in the cradle of the Renaissance, they gaze at, stand in the shadows of, and walk through seminal works of art they have known only through photographs: Michelangelo's David, Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Brunelleschi's breath-taking Duomo. The city is human creativity given fabulous form. Students cannot help but feel the presence of giants who shaped Western culture. Here lived and studied Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo de Medici, and Galileo. The Florence Study Center, located within the Palazzo Alessandri-a fifteenth-century urban palace-is a short stroll from the marbled Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River, and the renowned Uffizi Gallery. Today, the center houses a well-stocked library, computer lab, student lounge, and classrooms. It is a gathering place for all the students and faculty, who also look forward to scheduled socials, Italian-style: leisurely dinners at inimitable Florentine restaurants.
Highlights:
On day trips alone, students can see and study the multifaceted treasures of Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra. Regular three-day weekends allow longer trips to cities such as Venice and Rome-exceptional cultural experiences which faculty prepare for and share with, their students. During spring and fall programs, students have a ten-day term break for extended personal travel. Summer students have exciting travel opportunities via the program excursions.
