Since 1950, IES has been building quality study abroad programs and introducing U.S. students to new places, studies, and ways of thinking. A non-profit educational organization, IES offers high academic standards and extensive financial aid in almost 30 programs throughout the world. IES (the Institute for the International Education of Students) has announced a new IES summer program in Melbourne beginning in the summer of 2002. IES Melbourne, Australia The IES Melbourne summer program is organized by the Australia Centre of the University of Melbourne, an outstanding research and teaching university. The IES program consists of four interlinking modules, with students required to select two or three modules. This unique summer school introduces students to the history, cultural, and political life in Australia. All students must take Module A (Politics, Society, and Identity in Australia) which includes a 3-day field trip to Lorne. Students then may choose between Module B (Cross Cultural-Currents: Indigenous and Multicultural Issues in Australia), with a trip to Central Australia, or Module C, Australian Internships. Students can opt to continue with Module D (Australia in the World) after completion of Module B or C or depart the program. See below for more details on each Module. Module A: AS 208 Politics, Society and Identity in Australia (includes a 3-day trip to Lorne) (3 cr). This compulsory core class is intended to provide students with a broad understanding of Australian society and culture, and the historical forces that are shaping contemporary realities. Module B: AS/SO/AN 209 Cross-cultural Currents: Indigenous and multicultural issues in Australia (includes a 6-day trip to Central Australia) (3 cr). Explore cross-cultural interactions in Australia, with particular emphasis on the relations between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians and the impact of mass immigration on Australian society and multiculturalism. Module C: IN 295 Australian Internships (3 cr. The Australian Centre will provide a range of business, community and arts based internships for students. The unpaid internships will include close academic supervision and intensive orientation seminars prior to placement. Module D: AS/IR 210 Australia in the World (2 cr). This course examines Australia's international relations and the cultural, ideological, historical and theoretical context in which Australian foreign policy has been formulated.
Highlights:
The IES Melbourne program sponsors a field trip that gives students a unique opportunity to enrich their classroom learning. This trip normally occurs between the end of orientation and the beginning of classes at the University of Melbourne. Students who pair a summer program with the preceding IES spring program or the following fall semester or full-year program will receive a $500 credit on their invoice.
