Description:
The Vietnam Immersion program is designed for all students with an interest in delving into the dynamic environment of contemporary Vietnam.Offering the exciting opportunity to explore a country rich in history, art and culture, the Vietnam Immersion program challenges students both inside the classroom and out through diverse academics, hands-on service-learning projects, innovative activities and rooming with a Vietnamese university student. The Vietnam Immersion program strikes a careful balance between Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies courses. It also emphasizes student's individual needs by offering course choices and independent study. Students take Vietnamese language, Introduction to Vietnamese Studies, a service-learning placement or independent study course, and a social science or humanities elective of their choice. All Vietnamese studies courses are taught in English. CET students have the unique opportunity to live with Vietnamese roommates in a student guest-house. Vietnamese students are selected from a number of prestigious institutions in Ho Chi Minh City and are excited about a reciprocal exchange of culture, language and issues with their American counterparts. CET students agree that this housing arrangement is one of the highlights of the program. During the fall and spring terms, students and their Vietnamese roommates travel on a study trip through north and central Vietnam. In Hanoi students visit the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and other sites in the capital, and take a day trip to Halong Bay. In the central region, students explore the history and architecture of Hue and Hoi An, investigate archeological vestiges of the ancient Cham civilization inMy Son and Danang, and visit such sites as the DMZ (former demilitarized zone), BachMa National Park (a former French hill station), and the Phong Nha cave complex. During the summer term, students take a variety of short study trips, such as a boat ride on theMekong Delta.
