IFSA-Butler at Massey University

  New Zealand
  • All Other Areas in New Zealand:
  • Palmerston North

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: February-November

Description: Massey University has a seventy-year tradition of academic and research excellence across a wide range of disciplines. It is a major comprehensive institution with five University Colleges and thirty-eight academic departments, institutes, and schools. Its philosophy is to help students prepare for their careers with programs that are relevant, innovative, flexible, and progressive.

With an enrollment of 36,500, Massey has the most students of any New Zealand university. More than 1,300 international students who come to Massey from over sixty-five countries find it a friendly place to live and a stimulating intellectual climate.

The main campus at Palmerston North is a beautiful, 400-acre site adjacent to the Manawatu River and just five minutes from the vibrant city center. The campus is a lively community, and students enjoy excellent amenities. These include cafýs and dining facilities, banks, a travel agency, bookstore, postal services, hair salon, and more. The university provides an on-campus health service, counseling service, learning support network, and 24-hour computing facilities. The library has 850,000 volumes and additional student services.

Accommodation is provided in small apartment blocks on campus. The university flats are within a five-minute walk of most services, including the library, recreation center, and computing facilities.

Highlights: IFSA-Butler offer integrated study at five universities in New Zealand. Unrivaled natural beauty combined with a rich cultural heritage make New Zealand an education all by itself. These beautiful surroundings coupled with high academic standards and scholastic excellence make a study abroad experience that is second to none.

Called Aotearoa by the native Maori people, New Zealand has long been lumped together with Australia as if the two were one and the same. In reality, New Zealand is vastly different from Australia and students will find the divergent histories and cultures of the island nation a fascinating topic of study, a topic which a student would be challenged to find anywhere else.

The academic year in New Zealand is reversed due to the seasonal inversion in the southern hemisphere. The academic year roughly follows the calendar year, beginning in late February and ending in late November. The application deadlines for IFSA-Butler programs in New Zealand are November 1 for the spring semester and academic year and March 1 for the fall semester. Remember that if you leave in February for your 'spring' semester, you will be arriving in New Zealand at the end of their summer and will stay until the middle of the winter season.
