SUNY Brockport: Ireland, Special Education Program
Ireland
Term: Summer
Dates: Vary - please inquire for more information.
Description:
The Special Education Program in Dublin, Ireland is a field-based course that allows graduate and undergraduate students to learn directly about special education in Ireland through visits to special education facilities as well as comprehensive schools with adaptations for special needs. In addition to observing classes in a variety of schools, participants will have the opportunity to talk with teachers and other educators about common interests. The Irish society has experienced major changes in recent years through its membership in the European Union as well as other influences. These changes have impacted education, and a visit to Ireland at this time will reveal a vibrant system that is actively examining its goals and practices. During the second week in June, the Irish Association of Teachers of Special Education (IATSE) holds its annual national conference at St. Patrick's College. Teachers and other professionals from across Ireland, as well as from the UK and EU member nations will share their research and their practical experiences. Participants will be registered for the conference and will be able to participate in all conference sessions as well as meal and social events. "SUNY Brockport study abroad programs are for students matriculated in the US only, US students only."
Highlights:
In addition to the planned program activities, participants will have an opportunity to experience life in another culture. While Dublin is the largest city in Ireland, it is a city on a human scale and is easy to get around on foot. The National Museum is a treasure trove of Ireland's past. It includes many fine pieces of gold jewelry from the Late Bronze Age and the famous 8th century Tara Brooch. A short walk from the museum is the Book of Kells, a 9th century illuminated manuscript housed in the old library of Trinity College. The Temple Bar is one of the city's oldest sections. In recent years, a number of restaurants and shops have emerged along its maze of streets. The pubs are centers of lively conversation and often are filled with the sounds of traditional Irish music.
