Description:
The SUNY Brockport Vietnam Program is the first study abroad program of its kind in Vietnam. Pete Peterson, the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, remarks on this program. While most US universities choose to focus their energies on counterparts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, it is heartening to hear of the inroads you are making in Central Vietnam. The program provides participants an international adventure in an exciting and historically rich community with a political system and social traditions that are fascinating. It is at one-semester program offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The program provides an opportunity for American undergraduates and graduates to be taught by instructors from Danang University, Duy Tan University, and the School of Politics of Danang City while the students are involved in community service activities. The students take five courses: History, Culture, Language, Politics and Community Service. The Community Service course is an experiential education course for a semester to those in need in Danang at an orphanage, nursing home, medical clinic, and elsewhere. The students also provide English language instruction to adults at two locations. "SUNY Brockport study abroad programs are for students matriculated in the US only, US students only."
Highlights:
Danang is the capital of Central Vietnam, about 400 miles midway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The small city is on the shore of the beautiful South China Sea and the Han River. It is a safe, tropical, city that reflects a rich culture and tradition. Once the scene of a massive US military build-up, it now welcomes the SUNY Brockport Vietnam Program and its students as friends. The city is approximate to the mountains, sea shore, museums, historical sights, tropical forests, recreational facilities, and a variety of fascinating activities. English is a fast-developing second language in the city. Americans are welcomed not with a recollection of the war but with a focus on the present and the future. Exciting shopping, recreation, eating, and social resources are everywhere.
