Description:
The Brockport Program at The University of Ghana is a one-semester program offered in both the fall and spring semesters which is designed to provide an opportunity for American undergraduates to become, during their semester of participation, University of Ghana undergraduates. They will attend the same classes, live in the same housing, and participate in the same social, cultural, athletic, sporting and academic extracurricular activities as their Ghanaian counterparts. The Brockport/University of Ghana Program is best described as a 'Full Integration' overseas academic program. In this aspect, the program is markedly different from overseas programs where American students are taught in classes which enroll only American students. "SUNY Brockport study abroad programs are for students matriculated in the US only, US students only."
Highlights:
Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, it became the University College of Ghana with Ghana's independence in March 1957. During those initial years it enjoyed a special relationship with the University of London, which supervised its academic programs and awarded University of London external degrees to its graduates. This special relationship came to an end in 1961 when, by an Act of Parliament, the University College was accorded full University status with authority to award its own degrees and diplomas. With a current student population of about 6,000, the University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of Ghana's five universities. Ghana is a small, tropical country peopled with a well-educated citizenry who are open and welcoming to Europeans and Americans. It is a democratic republic with a stable, developing economy. Ghana is a beautiful, tropical country boasting rain forests, wildfire parks, and pristine beaches. Its rich cultural history and strong artisan heritage inspire the colorful crafts found in many Ghanian marketplaces. Accra, the capital of Ghana, is a bustling, rapidly growing city of almost two million people and is approximately eight miles from the University of Ghana. Accra has a lively nightlife, affordable restaurants, and a decidedly "non-touristy" atmosphere that makes it a real resource for the participants of this program.
