Kenya
Term: Summer
Dates: May 24, 2010 - July 2, 2010
Description:
Berkeley Summer Sessions offers exciting Travel Study programs that give you the chance to combine international travel with academic achievement. Courses are taught by regular rank UC Berkeley faculty, faculty of host institutions, and UC Berkeley graduate student instructors.
Highlights:
Study environment, culture, and peacebuilding using Kenya as an in-depth case study. This course examines the nexus of environment and politics to better understand why conflict erupts and how peace might emerge. You will explore these issues through insights from environmental science, history, and political science, as you learn about local conditions in Kenya and how they form part of global patterns. A number of educational visits and tours across the country will provide you with a rich and empirical appreciation of specific challenges, including human/wildlife conflicts, and on-the-ground government and local community responses to these challenges. You will be joined in class by students from Kenyatta University in Nairobi, and will work together in teams to do research and conduct informational interviews with NGOs in Nairobi. Home to many international organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme and the UN Office in Africa, Nairobi is an established hub for development, business, and culture.
