Description:
Start your summer in tropical San Ignacio, Belize, studying alongside other Belizean and international students. Summer students choose several course offerings, from anthropology to environmental science, while bringing fieldwork and excursions to ancient Mayan ruins, lush rainforests and rural communities in the culturally diverse, Caribbean nation of Belize bring what you learn in class to life. From there, travel to Oaxaca, Mexico and explore the fascinating overlap of pre-Hispanic cultures, Spanish colonial history, and modern Mexico in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Coursework includes intensive Spanish and International Studies and is complemented by excursions and experiential learning in a hands-on sustainable development project alongside community members. Work on hands-on development projects alongside the community. Projects may include educational support, environmental conservation, public health outreach, women's rights, or small-business development. Final projects are selected by site directors based on community need.
Highlights:
ProWorld and Jacksonville University's program combines classroom and in the field study of Belize and Mexico's culture and history, immersive Spanish, hands-on community service development projects, cross cultural interaction and homestay living, and exploration of Belize and Mexico. Guided tours of ruins and traditional festivals compliment the academics and development work.
