ProBrazil and Jacksonville University share in a vision of empowering university students to make valuable contributions in Brazil through the study abroad volunteer program. The Semester in Brazil enhances students' global perspectives through a blend of academic coursework, field studies, and hands-on development project experience. ProBrazil students take courses at The Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia) which houses some of the best academic programs in Brazil. The university offers nearly every course of study and is particularly noted for its public health programs. All courses are taught by local Brazilian faculty with expertise in the specified area. Students may choose from the variety of academic courses and students with only a background in Spanish will be required to participate in an intensive Portuguese program prior to the commencement of classes. In addition to academic coursework, students will participate in service learning projects in Salvador throughout their semester. The Program Includes: * Intensive group orientation * 12 - 16 Academic Credits, Tuition Fees, Books, & Transcripts from JU * Academic classes four to five days a week * Airport pick up in Salvador da Bahia * Full room and board with a local family * Four to six group development project outings * $400 US per student of development project funding * Cultural and adventure excursions * 24 hour emergency contact on site * Regular staff check ins and access to ProBrazil office in Salvador Program fees do not include: international airfare, passport fees, insurance, independent travel during the program, or personal expenses. Program fees may change without notice due to currency exchanges and the unique nature of international travel.
Highlights:
Home to stunning colonial architecture and some of the most beautiful beaches and best surfing in the world, Salvador is also the center of Afro-Brazilian culture and has some of the leading educational institutions in the country. In our semester program, you will take courses taught by local Brazilian faculty at The Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia), which houses some of the best academic programs in Brazil and is particularly noted for its public health programs. In addition to academic coursework in classes ranging from the Economic, Political, and Social History of Brazil to Introduction to Social Medicine, students will participate in service learning projects in Salvador based on community needs and participant skills and interests. Students live with local homestay families and participate in cultural excursions and workshops throughout the semester.
