World History 1200-1750 Making of the Modern World 4

Dates: June 28 - July 31, 2010

Description: This global seminar is based in Istanbul, Turkey and offered in cooperation with UC San Diego. Explore Istanbul, "city of the world's desire!" For nearly two millennia, this city was the imperial capital, serving as the political, cultural, economic, and religious center of the Byzantine, then Ottoman Empires. Straddling both Europe and Asia, this city encompasses many traditions which you will encounter and interact: Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Turkish; Pagan, Christian, Jewish, Muslim; Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Post-modern; Empire and Nation; Cosmopolitan and Provincial; East and West.

Highlights: All courses are taught by professors from the UC San Diego. The program is based in Istanbul with multiple excursions and field trips. Students can earn up to 8 credits, which will be issued through the UC San Diego.

Cost Include Description:
Housing (Specific housing details may not be available prior to departure. Accommodations may vary.)
    * Twin bedded rooms with private bathrooms at 3-star Hotel Erboy
    * Linen and towels are available and will be changed daily
    * Air-conditioning in the rooms
    * Roommate requests will be accepted in writing until April 1, 2010 but cannot be guaranteed and must be mutual. Each student must request the other student in writing separately. The request must include the PID and first and last name for both students.

    * Breakfast during the entire trip at the hotel in Istanbul

    * Basilica Cistern
    * Guided tour of the Yedikule Castle and Theodosian Walls (Golden Gate)
    * Guided tour of Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum
    * Mevlevi Monastery for Whirling Dervish worship event
    * Private boat tour on the Bosphorus, stop over in Tarabya
    * Chora Monastery
    * Greek Orthodox Patriarchate
    * Guided tour of the Pammakaristos
    * Guided walking tour of Üsküdar
    * Atik Valide Mosque
    * Semsi Pasa Camii
    * Guided walking tour of the Galata Tower, Arap Mosque, Neve Shalom Synagogue
    * Orthodox Worship Service

Computer Access:
    * Free access to the classroom / computer lab 7 days a week
    * Free wireless internet access at Hotel Erboy
    * 2 hours survival Turkish course during the first week of the program

Transportation:
    * Transfer by private bus from Istanbul International Airport to the accommodation and return
    * Transportation to all excursions by private bus, ferry, and/or public transportation
    * Public transportation pass for the entire stay in Istanbul

Phones:
    * Rental cell phone for each student . (phone only minutes will have to be purchased at own expense)

Insurance & Health and Safety:
    * Comprehensive Gold Insurance Package (incl. Travel Health & Accident Insurance, Travel Accident Indemnity Insurance, Travel Assistance Insurance, Travel Luggage Insurance and Travel Third Party Liability Insurance)
    * Pre-departure orientation and orientation upon arrival
