2010 Overseas Odyssey Options in Bali,Indonesia
Indonesia
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: July 2-July 29
Description:
Adventure needs more than just a destination to travel to; it also requires a profound interest in exploration. You can travel the world, but that doesn't make you an explorer; it makes you a tourist, and the difference is clear. Tourists take trips; explorers take journeys. A tourist seldom probes beneath the surface, while an explorer is dauntless and willing to speak local languages, eat local cuisines and absorb local customs. Tourists rush here and there and might never stop to learn anything of value, while an explorer takes an afternoon to walk a single block and learns more in one day than the tourist learns in weeks. At International Doorways, we're all explorers, so knock on the door, open it, walk through and join us on the other side for a journey of exploration. Once you go through this doorway, you'll never look back. No more same old, same old; this is the summer when you stake your claim on your destiny. With the International Doorways group leaders guiding you in groups never larger than fourteen co-ed teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18, you're certain to get to know each other and the local population more easily. Courtesy and respect are required for everyone, so pack your bags and leave your shenanigans at home.
Highlights:
One of the most fulfilling parts of International Doorways' summer odyssey options is community service. Lending a helping hand makes a real difference in the lives of others while raising your own self- awareness and self esteem. You'll work side by side with disadvantaged and disabled children, watching them get through their everyday lives with grace and dignity, while they teach you something about yourself as well. You'll assist in the construction of homes and schools for those who have none and repair and reinforce other rundown buildings. You'll work in villages helping to purify water before it returns to the river, which then keeps their food and drink supply healthy and fresh. You'll nurse orphaned and injured animals back to health and back to their natural environment, and you'll also help other foundations whose goal it is to serve and preserve the ecological concerns of the earth--to keep it real and keep it green.

International Doorways's Mission Statement: Our goal at International Doorways is to help guide students as they develop stronger characters, minds, hearts and bodies while participating in rugged, exciting and challenging international adventures. Taking responsibility for completing community service projects in third world communities bolsters our good character and high self esteem.
Language study and interaction with other cultures promotes stronger minds and intellects. Stronger hearts evolve naturally when we look outside ourselves to the needs of others and stronger bodies are a result of strenuous and fun physical activities like white water rafting, climbing and backpacking.
The unique summer programs we offer in Africa, Bali, Peru/Bolivia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica/Panama are designed to stimulate, educate and help develop both a sense of maturity and an ability to make a difference by understanding first-hand the needs of the global community.
In addition to exploring other cultures, ancient and modern, learning local language, cooking, dancing and traditions, we also participate in fun activities such as snorkeling, diving, swimming, surfing, parasailing and playing team sports like soccer with local youth.
International Doorways invites you to experience an extraordinary summer.
