Description:
This Study Abroad Course gives you the opportunity to develop your social, political, and economic awareness and understanding of current and emerging world issues, particularly sustainability and environmental protection, by observing the agricultural methods and processes practiced in Costa Rica. Native soils, plants, crops, and livestock will be studied, especially their relationships to economic importance, distribution, and environment. You will gain a better understanding of the economic and agricultural bases of the country, the efforts undertaken to maintain environmental sustainability, and the culture of the Costa Rican people.
Highlights:
Students in forestry, horticulture, alternative agriculture, and conservation especially will benefit from exposure to the agricultural, business, and tourism industries found in Costa Rica. Potential visits include vegetable and plant production facilities, agricultural academies, and culturally and historically significant sites. On-campus class sessions will be held January 2 & 3 prior to departure for Costa Rica January 4. Students can earn three semester hours of upper-division undergraduate or graduate credit upon completion of the course requirements.

Cost Include Description:
Round-trip airfare to/from Costa Rica (departure city TBA but either Moline or Chicago, Illinois), double/triple room accommodations, in-country motor coach transportation, guide/translator, entry fees to scheduled sites, breakfast daily, four lunches, three dinners, and Costa Rican departure tax.NOT INCLUDED: WIU tuition, WIU student health insurance, passport, other meals (approximately USD 250), transportation to/from Macomb for class sessions, transportation to/from US departure city, and personal expenses.

Students must be admitted to WIU (visiting student status). Students must have completed at least 45 semester hours of college course work by the end of Fall 2009. No previous Spanish language proficiency required.
