Salamanca, located in northwestern Spain about two hours from Madrid, retains its enchanting medieval character. The city has been occupied by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Moors, and the Castilians. Hannibal, Columbus, Fray Luis de Leon, Cervantes, and Unamuno are among the city's famous residents. Spain itself is one of the birthplaces of Western civilizations and was once the most powerful nation in the world. Spain has undergone an intellectual and artistic revival that makes it one of Europe's most vital and flourishing cultural centers and the wellspring of philosophy and the arts.
