JMU Semester and Summer in London
England
Term: Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: Sep-Dec; Jan-Apr; Jun-Jul
Description:
As a JMU Student in London, you will attend theater & museums together as part of the program & class work. You will also travel together on several weekend excursions. You will live in a house with other JMU students, in the Bloomsbury area in the midst of the University of London. This area is convenient to classrooms, library and student union and it is also within walking distance of 80 percent of London's major attractions. Nearby you will find Regent's park, a huge complex of gardens, ponds, and playing fields for team sports, jogging, and tennis. Though quiet and safe, Bloomsbury is only a 10-minute walk from the night life of Piccadilly Circus, the Bohemian and punk world of Camden Market, the trendy venues of Covent Garden, the pin-striped and bowler-hat dignity of the Inns of Court, and the shoppers' paradise of Oxford Street. Within a five-minute walk of your front door, you will find a multitude of inexpensive Italian, Greek, and Indian restaurants.
Highlights:
In many respects, the charms of London are more enduring, though not as immediately obvious as those of Paris, Florence, or Salamanca. Perhaps this is part of what Samuel Johnson meant when he said, 'When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.' London hides its charms from the casual observer, but abundantly rewards the person willing to seek and change in order to know the city. It is a city of quiet green places, hidden just beyond traffic jams. Here, cozy pubs can be found only a step or two from gaudy neon districts. The Semester in London Program allows you to experience the new, the old, and the contrasts. New styles promenade before dignified and historic buildings. Included in your program will be curricular outings, all accompanied by lecturers and connected to reading and writing assignments. You will also be exposed to frequent lectures by guest speakers notable in the worlds of politics, media, and the arts.
