Summer in Oxford, England: Graduate Program in International Management

  England
  • Oxford:
  • Oxford

Term: Summer
Dates: July - August 2010

Description: The McDonough School of Business (MSB) and the Office of International Programs announce the 26th annual Graduate Business Program in International Management at Oxford, England. The program offers six semester credits to be earned during six weeks of study at Oxford. The outstanding features of the program include:

Instruction by regular Oxford University faculty members and British executives.

The traditional Oxford tutorial model.

Residence at the Liddell site of Corpus Christi College in a small, close knit group that participates in a variety of educational, cultural, and sporting events.

An optional Brussels-based tutorial on EU-related topics (travel expenses are extra).
The program is designed for graduate students in either business administration or related social science fields. The immediate benefit from participating in the program is knowledge of international management from a foreign perspective, which cannot be obtained in a U.S. setting. The long-term benefit is an awareness of cultural differences that will enrich the student's personal as well as work life for many years to come.

Curriculum:

The Oxford post-graduate tutorial is the mainstay of the program. Each student participates in an Integrative week of studies and three tutorials. The tutorial places particular emphasis on individual learning. Generally it takes the form of three meetings of two or three students with a member of the faculty in which each student makes an in-depth presentation and defends his/her analysis and synthesis. It is an enriching experience whose object is to develop confidence and independence of thought and judgment -- qualities vital to today's complex business world. A limited number of students will be able to undertake a Brussels-based tutorial on EU-related topics (travel expenses are extra).

All participants will enroll in the following course:

MGMT 598-62: International Management (6 credits).

Tutorial, lecture, and student project topics in past years have included the following:
- Strategic Alliances
- Credit Spreads in Emerging Markets
- Investment Opportunities in Emerging Europe and Africa
- Social Policy in the European Union
- Politics and the European Parliament
- Global Marketing and Technological Innovations
- International Investment in European Market

Faculty for lectures and tutorials are drawn from British Universities and UK private enterprises. Professors and Fellows from various Oxford Colleges as well as British corporate executives form the core faculty.

Upon successful completion of the program, Georgetown students will receive six (6) GU graduate semester credits. Non-Georgetown students should discuss transfer of credit with a dean or academic adviser at their home university.

Highlights: Accommodation:

Students reside in student housing at the Liddell site of Corpus Christi College in the city of Oxford. While on site, each student has a single, furnished room with a separate kitchen and bath for every three or four rooms. Accommodations include housekeeping services (bed linens, towels, and room cleaning), common rooms with a television, lecture rooms, a laundry room, and sports grounds. The Liddell site is immediately adjacent to the track where Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile. Lunch is provided Monday through Friday at the beautiful dining hall of Corpus Christi College, and a formal dinner is provided weekly at Trinity College. There is a BBQ every Sunday at the Liddell site. Oxford is connected by train, express coach, and motor way to London (40 miles) and other major British cities and historic sites.
