Summer in L'Aquila, Italy: Italian Language and Culture
Italy
- Other Cities in Italy:
L'Aquila
Term: Summer
Dates: May - July 2010
Description:
The Georgetown Summer Program in Italy offers students an opportunity for intensive language and culture study in the beautiful medieval town of L'Aquila. Located halfway between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coasts, the mountain town of L'Aquila, capital of the Abruzzo region, provides participants with a welcome respite from the Italian summer heat while allowing for a variety of excursions from the beaches of the Adriatic to the villages in the Apennines. Rome, with its historical and artistic patrimony and its countless cultural offerings, is only 70 miles away, easily reachable in less than two hours by public transportation. In contrast to many cities in Italy, L'Aquila has been spared from mass tourism, and students who participate in the Georgetown language and culture program will enjoy a profound opportunity for cultural immersion and intensive advanced-level language acquisition. Class size is limited to ten students to provide an optimal learning experience. Curriculum: All participants will enroll in one of the following six-credit courses: ITAL 111-62: Intensive Advanced Italian I (6 credits) or ITAL 112-62: Intensive Advanced Italian II (6 credits). All groups meet for three hours each day, from Monday to Thursday, for five weeks. All of the courses will be taught jointly by Georgetown and/or local faculty. In addition to regular classes, students attend roughly one short excursion or cultural activity per week in L'Aquila, while each Friday is set aside for a longer trip to explore the surrounding area. Upon successful completion of this program, Georgetown students will receive six (6) Georgetown University credits in Italian language. Non-Georgetown students should discuss transfer of credit with a dean or academic adviser at their home university.
