Description: The program will be hosted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), a public university founded in 1990. The program offers Advanced Spanish for Business, Spanish writing, literature, and linguistics courses, as well as two content courses in Spanish art history, and the history and politics of identity (regional studies).

As the capital of Catalonia within Spain and the European Union, Barcelona provides a unique location in which to study the themes of national identity in a multilingual and multicultural city. Barcelona is home to the richest Medieval Arts Museum in Europe, the Gothic Quarter, Museu Picasso, and Fundació Miró, as well as Gaudí's buildings.

Curriculum:

Students must enroll in nine credits of coursework, distributed between three courses.

Students enroll in one or two of the following courses: Advanced Spanish for Business, Linguistic Analysis and Writing, Introduction to Spanish Linguistics, or Peninsular Literature (I or II). These courses follow the syllabi established by the Spanish and Portuguese Department.

Students are also required to enroll in one or both of the following three-credit content courses (to bring their enrollment up to 9 credits):

History & Politics of National Identity (3 credits) - Through a review of the most important sociopolitical phenomena in Catalan history, visits to key sites and reading of original documents, students will gain first hand experience on the relationship between the territory, history, and culture in the creation of the Catalan identity and its relation to Spanish and European identities.

Catalan Art History (3 credits) - A study of aesthetic, artistic, and intellectual movements in Catalonia. Discussion will focus on the expression of cultural identity through the arts, particularly architecture, from early times to the present.

Upon successful completion of the program, Georgetown students receive nine GU credits.

Students should have completed coursework at the Advanced II level (SPAN 102, 104, or 112) or higher. A minimum 2.7 GPA is also required. Please note, applications will not be processed unless they are complete and received by the due date. Students must pledge to speak only in Spanish with the other members of the group during their stay in Spain. Breaking this pledge will result in a reduced course grade and possibly no credit.
