European Integration Perspectives: Now and Then - Winter University 2010

Description: This three week winter university study abroad program is offered in cooperation with Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin and was designed especially for undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in contemporary history, social sciences, German studies, European studies.

The course explores the events that took place in the walled city 20 years ago and puts them into the context of the German reunifi cation and European integration. Focus is put on the important role of civil society in these developments.

The course will also draw on a variety of texts from political and sociological theory that attempt to explain what happened, and why it happened. The course will end with the mapping of possible future developments of the European Union and its geopolitical role. Background on German contemporary history and the current political situation in Europe will be gained through literature, films and excursions.

* German Language Lessons (can be booked additionally)

German language lessons can be combined with the course above. Lessons will take place in the morning 3 days a week and can be arranged upon request for an additional fee of USD 750.

In addition to your course, a variety of cultural field trips, vists and hands-on experiences are included in the program, for example:

* Visit the Reichstag (German Parliament)
* Visit Checkpoint Charlie
* Excursion to the German Historical Museum
* Lecture and visit to the Jewish Museum
* Tour the Story of Berlin The Capital's Exhibition with an Original Nuclear Shelter
* Company visits in Berlin
* Visit a concentration camp in Sachsenhausen
* Foregin films, weekly cultural excursions and other events

    * Airport pick up, orientation and welcome dinner
    * A CEPA on-site coordinator will meet and greet you on your arrival day and take you to your accommodation. Your coordinator will be available for assistance or in case of emergencies.

    * Academic course (10 hours per week / 3 days a week)

    * 1-2 cultural excursions /social activities weekly in and around Berlin

    * A German tutor student from Humboldt University will be available for questions and conversation
    * Accommodation in student apartments (shared)
    * Computer and internet access at the computer and media center
    * Free entrance to the Humboldt University museums
