Description:
Cambodia children are still recovering from years of violence and corruption. GSC volunteers that choose to work with the Orphanage Care Program will partner with local orphanages that not only provide food and shelter, but also serve as a nurturing environment in which children can grow and thrive. Volunteers will assist with the daily activities of the orphanage, but will also focus on helping with the English education programs which are a common feature of Cambodian orphanages. While there is a need for technical assistance, participants will also serve as mentors to children who will value the guidance and their newfound friendships.
Highlights:
Once in-country, the GSC Cambodian staff will provide participants with additional training on what to expect in the classroom, suggested activities and games, as well as classroom management techniques. All participants will receive an initial week of orientation, which includes technical training, Khmer language lessons, and culture and history lessons about Cambodia. In addition, volunteers will have the chance to visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and the Killing Fields at Cheoung Ek. During one of the weekends, participants will go on a three-day visit to Angkor Wat, or a two-day trip to visit the local sites around Phnom Penh.
