Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development: Views from Latin America

Term: Spring, Summer 
Dates: May 23-June 6, 2010

Description: What does it mean to prioritize land conservation in a region where the gap between rich and poor is worsening? What challenges do international trade agreements present those who seek national policies of sustainable development? What are the relationships between deforestation, water pollution and indigenous peoples? This seminar will explore these and other questions by engaging in dialogue with Guatemalan individuals and organizations from diverse backgrounds and worldviews concerned with sustainable development and environmental justice. Sponsored by The Davidson Honors College and the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Montana.

Highlights:
* Visit the ruins of the ancient Mayan ceremonial center
* Experience the lowland tropical rainforest environment of the Peten
* Discuss environmental theories for the collapse of the classic Mayan civilization
* Discuss development strategies with elected officials and community leaders
* Visit Mayan communities around Lake Atitlan and discuss their projects in fair trade, organic coffee
* Meet with widows who lost their husbands during the civil war; learn about their weaving cooperative
* Speak to leaders of human rights organizations about the progress of the Peace Accords and ongoing human rights issues in Guatemala
