FSU: Summer in Costa Rica
Costa Rica
Term: Summer
Dates: inquire for more info.
Description:
Volcanoes, lush rainforests, rushing white water, towering arid mountains: the diversity of Costa Rica's ecosystems is extraordinary, the beauty breathtaking. For twenty years, Florida State University has offered students an unparalleled educational experience in Costa Rica-a sound academic program in a fascinating natural setting. Besides the dazzling environment for research and recreation (Costa Rica possesses both Pacific and Caribbean coasts), students will discover the region's pre-Columbian and colonial past in local museums and landmarks-and delight in the unique national cuisine, from rice and beans to exotic Caribbean fare. Coursework and excursions: Participants must have at least two years of high school Spanish or previous experience with foreign language study to enroll in this program. Courses are taught by experienced Florida State faculty and Costa Rican experts in specialized fields. Housing: Students live with selected Costa Rican host families. The university has found this not only the most comfortable arrangement for students in San Jose, but an optimal way to introduce students to the culture and to provide additional language practice.
Highlights:
Both social-cultural events and group excursions are program highlights. In previous years, students made day excursions to the Arenal Volcano and to Isla Tortuga. No student ever forgets a white-water rafting adventure down the Pacuare River! Weekend trips may include the Canopy Tour at the Iguana Park and a visit to the Tortuguera canals. These program-sponsored trips, planned by the resident director, vary yearly.
