Maryland-in-Haifa

  Israel
    Haifa

Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: Fall or Spring

Description: Spend a semester in a city where you can experience Israel's rich and diverse mosaic of cultures. Your classroom will be the land of Israel, a country that is vibrantly modern, yet simultaneously steeped in history. Live and learn in a beautiful city on a gorgeous campus, just minutes from Carmel National Forest, Israel's largest park. Work on your Hebrew or Arabic with the friends you have made from around the world and watch the sun rise over the hills of the Galilee and set over the Mediterranean Sea. Play a role in the search for common ground and mutual understanding in this fascinating part of the world. Maryland-in-Haifa offers all of this and more.

Highlights: Maryland-in-Haifa is a 15-credit UM faculty-lead study abroad program based at the University of Haifa. The academic program includes:

1) A specially designed course, "The Roots of Societal Conflicts and the Search for Common Ground," taught by Prof. Edward Edy Kaufman, Senior Research Associate at the Center for Development and Conflict Management at UM.

2) Hebrew or Arabic Language Study for beginning to advanced levels.

3) More than 15 elective courses are offered in English within a wide variety of academic disciplines, including courses in Communications, Economics, English, Government and Politics, History, Jewish Studies, Law, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.

4) Guided Fieldwork: Cultural Communication - Academic meetings and weekly sessions with local Arab students are designed to develop the students' cross-cultural communication abilities. Classes also provide an interdisciplinary academic background on intercultural communication based on readings in social and clinical psychology, sociology, anthropology, and political science.

5) Internship option - Internships are related to a student's academic interest and are mainly completed with organizations in Haifa that work on furthering Arab-Jewish relations. Students will work 10-15 hours a week at their chosen facility.
