Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Fall 15 weeks: early Sept-mid-Dec; Spring 15 weeks: mid-Feb-late May; Academic Year 34 weeks: early Sept-late May

Description: The goals of the Liberal Arts program are to enable students to develop their ability to communicate in Italian through intensive language instruction, and broaden their knowledge of contemporary and historical Italy, particularly Southern Italy, through content courses taught in Italian.

Academic Program
The CIEE Study Center at the University of Naples "L' Orientale" (Orientale) opens in 2010. The Liberal Arts program is designed for students with an interest in deepening their knowledge of Italy through specially designed content courses with an emphasis on Southern Italy taught in Italian, along with Italian language study. Students with strong language skills are strongly encouraged to enroll directly in University courses.

Academic Culture
CIEE courses are designed for U.S. undergraduates, and the teaching and learning methods will be familiar to most U.S. students. However, classes are taught by local faculty and require students to work independently outside the classroom. Learning takes place through a coherent blend of lectures, group seminars, visits, and practical work. CIEE class size is small with classes taking place Monday through Friday. Classes at Orientale range from 10-60 students, with the average class size made up of about 20 students. Orientale Classes meet from one to three times per week and the average length is about two hours, though it can range from one to four hours. The standard format is lecture, though seminars may be encouraged in the latter half of the semester. Orientale classes extend into January and into June, but early exams are permitted for CIEE students.

Highlights:

  • Direct enrollment in a wide range of liberal arts courses
  • Highly effective Italian language teaching
  • Opportunity to speak Italian everyday in a true Italian environment
  • Italian roommates and student guides help acclimate to life in Naples
  • Excursions to cultural attractions in Naples and the Campania region; overnight field trips to locations such as Rome, the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily

Culture
Cultural Activities and Field Trips
The academic program is supplemented with excursions to local places of interest and cultural activities such as local festivals, theater, art museums and cathedrals, group dinners, and unique activities such as a visit to a costume factory. Students are grouped by language level whenever possible. In addition, field trips to nearby locations such as Rome, Salerno, and the Amalfi Coast provide participants with a solid understanding of this region of Italy.

Immersion
Student Guides
For the first few weeks of the program, each CIEE student is paired with an Orientale student. The Student Guide helps the CIEE student get to know the historic center of Naples, the University, and helps with bureaucratic processes.

Student Guides
CIEE students are also paired with Orientale students for a variety of language and cultural exchange activities throughout the semester. These students help provide CIEE participants with additional language support and a firsthand look at the lifestyle of their Italian peers.

University Sports Facilities
CIEE students have access to the sports center, Centro Universitario Sportivo (C.U.S), which is located a short subway ride from the center of the city. C.U.S is a recently-built University sports center, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools; gyms; professional fields for soccer, rugby, tennis, and track-and-field; basketball and volleyball courts; yoga rooms; and more.
