Discover the unique geology, flora and culture of Aotearoa/New Zealand and credit study back to your home degree! This new, 4-week programme, is offered at undergraduate and graduate level including 4 days of preliminary lectures/laboratory work and readings plus an extended field trip followed by report preparation. You will climb an active volcano, experience geothermal activity, map spectacular sedimentary sequences, observe the Milankovitch cycle on a rapidly uplifting coastline, explore caves, accretion at the plate boundary, economic geology, environmental geology and the biological diversity of 100 million years of isolation. In addition you will experience aspects of traditional Maori culture including a powhiri (welcome), a hangi (feast) and arts and crafts. Visits to the unique New Zealand bush will be guided by local experts who will point out features of the New Zealand flora and explain how the flora was used by indigenous peoples. You will learn about colliding plates, subduction, arc volcanism, basalt, andesite and rhyolite volcanoes, plate margin accretion, weathering erosion transport and sedimentation, glacial eustatic sea level changes, transgression-recession and sequence track stratigraphy, landform (process and substrate), geothermal fluid chemistry, hydrothermal ore genesis, the carbonate system, diagenesis, limnology and eutrophication.
