Description: Discover the unique geology, flora and culture of Aotearoa/New Zealand and credit study back to your home degree!

This new, 4-week programme, is offered at undergraduate and graduate level including 4 days of preliminary lectures/laboratory work and readings plus an extended field trip followed by report preparation.

You will climb an active volcano, experience geothermal activity, map spectacular sedimentary sequences, observe the Milankovitch cycle on a rapidly uplifting coastline, explore caves, accretion at the plate boundary, economic geology, environmental geology and the biological diversity of 100 million years of isolation.

In addition you will experience aspects of traditional Maori culture including a powhiri (welcome), a hangi (feast) and arts and crafts. Visits to the unique New Zealand bush will be guided by local experts who will point out features of the New Zealand flora and explain how the flora was used by indigenous peoples.

You will learn about colliding plates, subduction, arc volcanism, basalt, andesite and rhyolite volcanoes, plate margin accretion, weathering erosion transport and sedimentation, glacial eustatic sea level changes, transgression-recession and sequence track stratigraphy, landform (process and substrate), geothermal fluid chemistry, hydrothermal ore genesis, the carbonate system, diagenesis, limnology and eutrophication.

- 12 day field trip to study the amazing Geology and Geochemistry of the North Island
- Overnight stay and cultural experience at a Maori Marae (Traditional Meeting Place)
- Field excursion to Ngamanawa bush with introduction to native New Zealand flora and to Rongoa Maori (Traditional Maori Medicine)
- Trip to White Island that will give an in-depth guided tour of one of the worlds most interesting volcanoes

The course fees at undergraduate level are USD 2,399 (NZD 3660) and for graduate level USD 3,596 (NZD 5489).

Additional costs for the field trip are listed below:

To be eligible to apply for this programme you need to be currently studying in at least the first year or have completed a Bachelor qualification. You will need to provide full transcripts for all your tertiary study.
