Overview The Italian Summer Language Institute will be offered in Florence, Italy, for students who wish to study the Italian language at any level, from beginning to advanced. Students attend the Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri (C.L.I.) for either June, July, or June and July. The C.L.I. is located in a 19th-century building in Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the citys center. Classes at the C.L.I. are generally limited to 13-14 students and are conducted in Italian by native Italian instructors. For each one-month course of study the student has classes each morning, five days per week, evening cooking classes, and museum visits. Weekends and afternoons are free. General cultural assignments are given by the Institute Director to supplement the students language training and overall appreciation of Florence.

Courses Offered Students who have a GPA in Italian language courses lower than 3.0 at the time of application must enroll in ITAL 303. ITAL 108 Elementary Italian Conversation II. (3 credits) Essentials of grammar and basic oral communication skills, practice in grammar, listening comprehension, and conversation. ITAL 110 Elementary Italian I. (5 credits) Essentials of grammar and composition, reading of simple texts, practice in pronunciation and speaking. ITAL 120 Elementary Italian II. (5 credits) Continuation of ITAL 110. ITAL 230 Intermediate Italian I. (3 credits) Intensive and extensive reading of modern texts; vocabulary, idioms, and discussion in Italian of texts. Systematic review of grammar. ITAL 240 Intermediate Italian II. (3 credits) Continuation of ITAL 230. ITAL 303 Italian Language and Civilization I. (3 credits) Advanced study of Italian grammar, conversation, and composition with selected aspects of Italian civilization. Available to participants in the Summer Institute or semester abroad in Florence only. ITAL 304 Italian Language and Civilization II. (3 credits) Continuation of ITAL 303. ITAL 300 Composition and Conversation. H/W. (3 credits) An intensive review of Italian grammar and usage for the advanced student. Compositions, conversation, and supportive readings in Italian. ITAL 315 Advanced Composition and Conversation. H/W. (3 credits) Continuation of ITAL 300. ITAL 495 * Directed Readings in Italian. (1-3 credits) (*permission by the Italian major advisor is required)

Approximately $3,520 for the one-month session and $5,660 for the two-month session. (Non-KU students: Approximately $3,720 for one month and $5,860 for two months). The program fee includes instruction at the C.L.I., books, cooking classes, room and board (demi-pensione), and emergency medical evacuation and repatriation services.Tuition: With the implementation of the Tuition Compact Plan, students will pay KU tuition directly to the Bursars Office. Estimated tuition and fees is $1,239 for 6 credit hours or $1,859 for 9 credit hours (based on standard tuition rate.) Actual tuition expenses for KU students will vary by the students individual tuition compact. Non-KU students will pay the standard tuition rate listed above. Thus, the combined program fee and KU tuition will be approximately $4,759 for the one-month session and $7,519 for the two-month session. Estimated Additional costs: Airfare, passport fees, one meal per day, in-city transportation, additional cultural events students may choose to attend on their own, and incidental personal expenses.
