This is an opportunity for students who wish to expand their horizons, meet exciting new people, acquire deeper knowledge of China, and develop valuable skills for life. The Camp not only enhances student's ability to gain admission to top universities, but also prepares them for the rigors of college life. By immersing themselves together in the Chinese language and culture, students will be able to establish long-lasting friendships that will later become beneficial to their business and educational relationships. Most of all, students will find this experience among the most joyful two weeks of their lives.
Highlights:
The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, covering all aspects of language and culture; to be appropriate for all levels from beginner to advanced; and to produce well-rounded students with the confidence to interact with Chinese people in business and the community at large. A. Language 1. Mandarin a.from basic to advanced, intensive instruction b.placement by written exams and oral interviews 2. 22-25 hours per week 3. 8-10 students per class 4. Native Chinese instructors (beginning level instructors also speak English) 5. Four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening a. pinyin method of Romanize b. traditional and simplified Chinese characters 6. Lessons a. written exercises b. dramatization exercises c. quizzes and tests d. listening to tapes 7. Conversation classes a. one on one with Chinese language partner b. HSK test of fluency c. certificate of accomplishment issued B. Levels 1. Beginner (knowledge of few words) a. tone differentiation emphasized b. language survival skills to build confidence c. acquisition of basic skills 1) 300 word vocabulary and basic grammar 2) Numbers, greetings, directions, food, place names, etc. 2. Intermediate a. character recognition and sentence reading b. idioms c. conversational practice d. effective knowledge 1) 500 characters 2) 300 word vocabulary 3. Intermediate/advanced a. increased knowledge 1) 800 characters 2)1300 word vocabulary b. composition using correct grammar and idiomatic expressions 4. Advanced a. oral and written fluency b. cultural understanding c. conversational ease and depth d. thorough understanding of novels, newspaper articles, radio & TV
