GSE at Universidad Antonio Nebrija - Spanish Language and Elective Studies
Spain
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: Spring semester 2010 is early February - late May
Description:
The Universidad Antonio Nebrija in Madrid ranks among the top-ten universities in the country, and with its' 2,800 students offers nothing less than an individual and concentrated education. A private university founded in 1995, it is named after Antonio de Nebrija, a great humanist and the first grammarian of the Spanish language. In 1492, Nebrija presented the first ever grammar book of a romance language to Queen Isabel: Gramática de la lengua Castellana. As such, the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language is a key activity of the University and the Center of Hispanic Studies at Nebrija has been dedicated exclusively to Spanish language training since its inception. The Spanish Language and Electives program at the Universidad Antonio Nebrija Madrid provides GSE students an opportunity to attend classes side-by-side with other Spanish students. This program allows students to take a Spanish language class and up to four electives taught in English or Spanish. During the summer, program participants will enroll in one Spanish language course and one elective.
Highlights:
Madrid, located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, is a city of restless energy filled with tremendous history and life. Serving as Spain's political, intellectual, and cultural center, Madrid is known as the city that never sleeps. The Madrilenos (citizens of Madrid) never stop enjoying life; leaving straight from school or work for the city's many plazas, tapas restaurants, romantic parks, living each day to its fullest. The city is home to Museo Del Prado, one of the world's truly great museums, and the sacred turf of Real Madrid, the internationally recognized soccer team. Take a stroll through Madrid's labyrinthine neighborhoods with narrow alleys and ancient plazas and you will see why so many are drawn to this remarkable city. Whether hypnotized by the song and dance of the Spanish gypsies at a live Flamenco show or mesmerized by a matador's skill and grace at a bullfight, Madrid offers a truly unique Global Student Experience. "I wanted to improve my grasp of the language. I know that language fairly well, but that's Latin American Spanish. Now I feel I have a more thorough understanding of the grammar thanks to the actual use of the vosotros form and feel more confident in my abilities as a tutor. Also, I wanted to get to know myself better. You can learn a lot about yourself when placed in a totally new context, and I definitely did that. I've already recommended this program to other students. I loved every single day in Spain. Everything GSE provided was great. From the very beginning, the GSE staff was amazing and so helpful. My Program Advisor and I became friends because she called me every week to make sure everything was going smoothly and was super patient with all of my questions. Even when she was unavailable, the entire staff was really great. The team in Spain has been nothing short of incredible in every way possible. It really helps to have local people on your side in a new and unfamiliar world." --GSE participant from University of California, Irvine
