GSE offers Spanish Language and Culture and Intensive Spanish Language programs at the Universidad de Guadalajara to students of all language levels, including beginners with no prior Spanish experience. The Spanish Language and Culture Program is designed for students of any language level who would like to focus on improving Spanish language proficiency while learning about Mexican culture. The courses are taught in 5-week sessions with a total of three sessions for the entire semester. Each session is equivalent to two courses and/or six academic credits. Each language and elective course meets for a total of 50 contact hours throughout the semester. Students can enroll in five courses, earning up to 18 semester credits. Classes generally meet in the morning and afternoon, Monday through Friday. Students at the high-intermediate level and above will have the option of taking Mexican culture electives in addition to the required language course. The five-week summer Intensive Language program is designed to help students achieve a certain level of fluency and communicative skills for everyday life. Classes are no larger than 15 students, which enables gives each student personalized attention. Students can earn up to 6 semester credits for a total of 100 contact hours. For all programs, there is no language requirement but it is recommended that students have taken at least one semester of college level Spanish before enrolling. Upon arrival, students will be given a placement exam to determine the appropriate language level. Students with more advanced language ability are eligible for the Integrated Studies Program and are able to take regular courses instructed in Spanish at the University of Guadalajara.
