Pierce College
Greece
Term: Throughout the year
Description:
The comprehensive and intensive curriculum of Pierce College exceeds the Analytical Program authorized by the government. English is the compulsory first foreign language, with increasing hours of teaching depending on the level. English is a compulsory subject for the College and is taught more hours per week than those mandated by the curriculum of the Ministry of Education and Religion. The College's highly trained teachers implement the most advanced curriculum and use the audiovisual method in their teaching. Students are divided into small groups according to their level of knowledge. Courses in foreign languages other than English, like French and German, are also part of the curriculum. As in the teaching of English, in the teaching of French and German students are divided into groups according to their level of knowledge. The Language Lab and Media Center contribute considerably to more effective teaching and a smoother learning of foreign languages. Beginning in 1993-94 computer science courses became mandatory in all grades of the Gymnasium, and since 1998-99 they have been offered in the Lyceum as well. The school program is supplemented by educational trips, which allow students to venture out from the confines of the classroom and to have first-hand contact with art (museums, archeological sites, galleries), economy and finance (factories, businesses), the media (newspapers, magazines, television stations), and political institutions (parliament, court houses). Contact with nature and a deeper realization of its role and importance - undoubtedly a primary goal of education and crucial in the development of the young person - is served sufficiently with the combination of theoretical study and onsite research provided by environmental trips.
