Portuguese Language and Culture in Brazil

Dates: May 27 - June 18, 2010

Description: Spend 3 weeks learning Portuguese in Brazil in Summer 2010. This program will allow students to begin or enhance their Portuguese language skills and experience the local culture by living with a Brazilian host family. Participants will take classes at the Faculdade Integrada do Ceará (FIC) and will be taught by FIC staff members. In addition, students will participate in a community service component providing a unique opportunity to observe and reflect upon the daily life of the local people first-hand.

Participants will also gain an appreciation for the unique customs and history of the region and the Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous contributions to Brazilian culture through visits and excursions. Highlights include visits to museums and other important sites including the Fortaleza Negra, an Indian reservation, and Redenção - the first city in Brazil to abolish slavery.

Portuguese Language and Culture in Brazil

Highlights: The program is based in Fortaleza in the state of Ceará in the northeast of Brazil. The region is known for its traditions and geographic diversity and has historically been one of the most impoverished areas of Brazil. Fortaleza is the state's capital and home to over 3.3 million people. It is a cosmopolitan city with beautiful beaches and a thriving cultural center.

    Cost Include Description:
    Cost includes includes academic credit (6 credits), health insurance, housing, some meals, roundtrip airfare, and excursions. Additional costs include USD 150 study abroad fee, Brazilian visa (approximately USD 200), all other meals, and personal expenses.
