Highlights:
A small city of almost 200,000, Salamanca is only 2.5 hours from Madrid by train. The city is always bustling with residents, students and tourists. The Plaza Mayor, undoubtedly the most beautiful in Spain, is the center of activity. Busy at all hours of the day and night, it is host to many shops, restaurants, cafes, and casual strollers. Residents and visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the 'Golden City' from across the Tormes on the rivers' left bank. Crossing the river over the ancient Roman bridge, one finds the famous 'bull' mentioned in El Lazarillo de Tormes, that forms part of the coat of arms of the city. Next to the bridge is the rebuilt 12th Century Church of Santiago (Saint James), with three half-Romanesque, half-Mudejar apses. Continuing up the street called 'Tentenecio' (quiet!), is the Old Cathedral, a creation of Jeronimo de Perigueux, the chaplain of El Cid. If there's one thing Salamanca is not, it's a sleepy little town. In fact, Salamanca is famous throughout Spain for the countless number of bars and clubs that line streets throughout the areas around the Plaza Mayor and beyond. Beginning around 8PM, the area around the Plaza starts to buzz with activity as people take a stroll, return from class, or buy groceries for their dinner. By midnight the bars and clubs begin to fill and Salamanca comes alive.
