Understanding the EURASIAN Region
Turkey
Term: Throughout the year
Description:
With its prime geographical position at the juncture of the East and the West, Istanbul has played a unique role in world events. The fourth-century Roman Emperor, Constantine, recognized its potential as a major trading city when he relocated his capital there. Over the centuries, Turkey has proven to be of strategic military, economic, and cultural importance as a melting pot of influences from many diverse sources. Today, as a strong regional power with many ties to Europe and Asia, Turkey is the ideal place to study the development of true globalization throughout the Eurasian subcontinent. Participants live and study at the private English speaking Turkish institution, KoƧ University, which is located north of the urban center of Istanbul. Upon arrival, students participate in a three-day symposium that addresses contemporary issues relevant to the development of the Eurasian subcontinent. The symposium and program courses investigate such topics as: migration; resurgence of Russia; technology and sustainable development; energy and regional economic development; sustainable development and the environment; and urban and regional planning. This exciting program includes trips to Bursa, Mardin and Cappadocia where students will visit such famous sites as the Ihlara Valley, Midyat, and the Baths of Eskikaplica. The students will also tour the city of Istanbul where they will visit Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, and the Galata Tower.
