Ecuador presents a complex scenario of social, cultural, economic and political phenomena nestled in the breath-taking Andes Mountains. Intensive language instruction focuses on development of language skills and cross-cultural awareness. Outside class, students will improve language proficiency, explore cultural identity and discuss contemporary social and economic issues of Ecuador. Students gain a first-hand perspective of Ecuadorian life as they immerse themselves in this intensive language and cultural experience. Field work and visits in and around the beautiful, culture-rich, capital city of Quito will supplement language learning. Course includes lectures and seminars, as well as urban and rural site visits. Central Questions * What are some of the causes of inequality in Ecuador? * What social initiatives, prepared by various social actors, work to overcome inequality and achieve social change?

Extras This program is worth 1 course credit (4 semester hours or 6 quarter credits) and uses the text book Identitades: Exploraciones e Interconexiones. Translated it is Identities: Explorations and Interconnections published by Pearson's Prentice Hall. Students must have completed three college-level courses in Spanish prior to participating in Intermediate Spanish II. In Quito, students stay with a host family. Hotels or hostels are used during group field trips. All meals are provided by families or through a food stipend during travel. The program fee includes airfare from the Minneapolis /St. Paul International Airport, ground travel to field sites, planned group excursions, necessary reading materials, and room and board.
