The program consists of three major components: a seminar on the oases of Egypt (held in Dakhleh Oasis), participation in excavations at the ancient site of Amheida (in Dakhleh Oasis), and a traveling seminar on Egyptian archaeology (held on site in locales from Aswan to Alexandria). An independent project that is tailored to the individual interests of the student is due in May. The project and courses together add up to 16 credits. There is also, however, a not-for-credit course in Egyptian colloquial Arabic that takes place in January. Our home base in January and February is an expedition field house in Dakhleh Oasis. The dig house is built in the traditional style of the oasis, but it incorporates a computer lab, a library, workrooms, kitchen and washing facilities, and numerous lounges and courtyard areas. In March, students stay at hotels in cities throughout the Nile Valley and when possible the trip from Aswan to Luxor is made by boat. Students who are interested in ancient and Greco-Roman Egypt, in the Roman Empire, in archaeology, or simply in experiencing life in contemporary Egypt will have an opportunity to further their interests by virtue of this unique semester abroad opportunity. Many of our past students have gone on to graduate work in related fields and/or have returned to participate in the excavations in subsequent years.
Highlights:
The program, which takes place from January through March, emphasizes on site experiential learning. Students study the history and culture of Egypt's oases in a seminar setting in Dakhleh Oasis and through an extended field trip to Kharga Oasis. The seminar on Egyptian archaeology takes place in the Nile Valley at some of the most famous sites in Egypt and also at some archaeological sites that are off-the-beaten-track or even off limits to regular tourists. In February, while still in Dakhleh, students have the opportunity to participate in numerous facets of NYU's excavations at the Roman period town of Amheida (ancient Trimithis).

Cost in US$: 2009: USD 18,700 tuition + USD 5,900 room & board
Cost Include Description:
NYU, Columbia College, and Barnard College undergraduates pay their normal tuition and receive their normal financial aid from their home institution. They also pay a room and board fee to the program equal to a standard room and board bill from NYU's College of Arts and Sciences. This fee includes air transportation to Egypt, all transportation within Egypt, hotel rooms when travelling, housing in the excavation house in Dakhla, all meals in the excavation house (including tea or coffee in the morning and afternoon), and a meal allowance when travelling. It also includes linen service and laundry in the excavation house (but not on the road). Students from other institutions will be billed by the Office of Global Programs for regular NYU tuition and for the board and room charge mentioned above. The tuition charge includes the 16 points of course credit provided by the program. Because different universities and colleges handle study abroad in different ways, students at institutions other than NYU and Columbia are advised to check with their study-abroad office to find out whether the home institution charges them normal fees and pays NYU or expects the student to pay NYU directly, as well as the applicability of their financial aid. Students accepted into the program are expected to pay a USD 500 deposit by May 31st to hold their place in the program. This deposit is credited against the fees listed above but is not refundable.

Scholarships are Available. Pell-grant eligible students are encouraged to apply for a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. These scholarships are for study abroad and only for Pell-grant eligible students.
