Description:
The Office of International Education and the VCU School of World Studies, in conjunction with the University for Foreigners of Perugia, Italy, are pleased to offer an innovative summer study-abroad program in Italy. The program offers an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian language and culture during your month in beautiful medieval Perugia. Participants will have a classroom-based language-learning experience with Italian natives from Perugia, as well as a cultural learning experience through lectures, tours and traditional Italian activities. Course and credit options: 6 or 7 VCU credits All participants will register for ITAL 391 The Italians for 3 credits, and will have the additional choice of one of the following courses: ITAL 101 Elementary Italian (4 credits), ITAL 102 Elementary Italian (4 credits), ITAL 201 Intermediate Italian, ITAL 205 Intermediate Italian Conversation, ITAL 300 Advanced Grammar and Conversation or ITAL 330 Survey of Literature (3 credits). Course description: ITAL 391 The Italians: This course introduces students to the rich history and world influence of Italy's heritage. It will trace the development of Italian culture from its origin to the modern age. Course taught in English. Italian language courses: Students will take intensive Italian instruction during the four weeks through the University for Foreigners of Perugia, at the beginner, intermediate or advanced levels. Three to four credits are available in Italian language and literature. Intermediate and advanced courses require attendance in grammar, syntax, reading, conversation and literature classes. Prerequisites apply.
Highlights:
There will be a day trip to Siena and Cortona, or Florence, and one to Assisi, some of the most beautiful towns of the wonderful Tuscany region. There will also be two weekend trips. One will go to Naples, Pompeii and Capri. On Saturday participants will bask in the hustle and bustle of Naples. Then, we will set our clocks back to 79 A.D. and take a stroll through the streets of Pompeii, where participants will see that the city of the dead is still very much alive. We will spend the night at a three-star hotel on the Amalfi Coast. Sunday will be spent in Capri, where you will enjoy the romantic and relaxing atmosphere of the island of love, have a chance to brush against the rich and famous and take a plunge in the deep blue sea. The second weekend trip will be to Venice.
