Study Abroad in Jamaica
Jamaica
Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Spring Break and Summer
Description:
In this one credit course offered through West Virginia University, students will spend a week studying the complexity of education and the challenges of development in Jamaica, while volunteering with the rural Petersfield community organization, The Association of Clubs (AOC). This course allows students to become familiar with the unique challenges faced by the Jamaican economy through an examination of the effects of tourism on the traditional sugarcane industry. Students have the chance to directly observe and experience the impact of globalization on the people and economy of Jamaica by staying with a host family, touring a local sugar estate, and visiting a major tourist resort in Negril. Students will truly experience the culture of Jamaica attending social, cultural, and recreational activities with community members. In addition to their studies, students will serve with the AOC on their current projects. With tourism dominating the Jamaican economy, rural communities like Petersfield are entering a new era in which they must strengthen their citizens toward action to ensure the economic sustainability of the community. Amizade first partnered with the AOC in 2003 and continues to connect people to this unique grassroots organization. Students will contribute their skills while absorbing the stories and strength of people working to build a better future for their community.
Highlights:
You will feel the friendship, warmth, and spirit of this beautiful island nation and its people not only through your service to the AOC, but through the experience of living with a Jamaican family and by attending community events or cultural activities. A typical day in Jamaica might include waking up to breakfast with your family, a pleasant walk to the AOC for class and discussion, tutoring children at a primary school, an afternoon game of football (American soccer) with local youth, and dinner with your host family followed by a presentation and discussion on Jamaican history and culture.
