Description:
This course will survey the prehistory of ancient Mesoamerica, with particular focus on the major aboriginal cultures of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize (i.e. the Olmecs, Teotihuacan, Zapotecs, Maya, Aztecs, etc.). Lectures, readings, slides, films, field trips, and discussions will cover the Pre-Columbian archaeology and culture history of Mesoamerica, with specific attention to the native arts, architecture, scientific achievements, physical anthropology and paleo-ethnography of principal Native groups. The course progresses chronologically from Paleo-Indian times to the European Conquest, with emphasis on major cultural achievements and the growth of civilizations in the various regions of the area. Study abroad for the summer in the only English speaking country in Central America. Students live in a resort for 4 weeks and travel around Belize. how much more fun can studying and earn university credits be!

What is included?* Up to 6 credits of tuition * Lab and field fees * Airport pickup and transfer from Belize City to San Ignacio (if you arrive / depart with the group) * Transportation to and from field sites * Double occupancy accommodation * Breakfast (Mondays to Fridays) * Orientation * Medical insurance fee (includes accidental death or medical evacuation / repatriation) Housing is arranged by Galen University. Students are housed in local family-run resorts, or in Galen University student housing. Students may share rooms and have access to limited cooking facilities in the small resorts or complete kitchens in the GU housing. If you have a preference, please notify us.
