Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, was founded in the 13th century, and now has a population of about 530,000. Stuttgart is the cultural center of the State of Baden-Württemberg with a wealth of theaters and concert halls. It is also the home of a world-famous ballet, museums and art galleries as well as academies of music and art. Stuttgart is also one of the largest agriculture, fruit and wine-producing centers in the Federal Republic. Many of the most renowned companies like Mercedes-Benz, DaimlerChrysler, Porsche and Bosch have factories there. In addition, there are numerous smaller companies involved in the production of machine tools, textiles and clothes, precision instruments, food and luxury items. There are also companies that specialize in woodworking, leather processing and the making of shoes and musical instruments. Stuttgart is also home to a number of large breweries as well as a small paper and chemical industry. With over 300 publishing houses and a highly developed graphic industry, Stuttgart has a reputation of being Germany's top publishing center. Optional Excursions A number of optional excursions will be offered to places such as Tübingen, Heidelberg, Ulm, the Black Forest, the Lake of Constance, as well as visits to medieval towns and villages near Stuttgart. Apart from the courses, excursions to some of the companies that have helped to make the region famous - DaimlerChrysler, Porsche, Bosch, Zeiss, etc - are an integral part of the curriculum.
Highlights:
Academic Program The Summer University at the Universität Stuttgart is an excellent opportunity for students who have had little or no exposure to German to experience a total immersion in the German language and culture right in the heart of Europe. Students will be in class Mondays-Thursdays. All participants will participate in a beginning-level German language course (GERM 104) each morning for five hours. Language classes will have a maximum of 15 students, and will be taught in English. In the afternoon, students will spend two hours in one additional course taught in English by German and other European faculty. The selection of courses taught in English includes: History of European Architecture, European Art History, and Essentials of Cross-Cultural Competence. Each of these courses will include integrated excursions.
